Following the Celestial Madonna, the Avengers entered a new era of epics under writers Jim Shooter and Roger Stern. The roster of the team changes once again to include the X-Man Beast (recently mutated to give him blue fur), a reformed Wonder Man, and the robotic bride of Ultron, Jocasta. This run also introduced the Avengers bureaucratic administrator, Henry Peter Gyrich.
The highlight of their era is the Korvac Saga which depicts a time traveler from the future who gains near omnipotent power from Galactus. To defeat this threat, the Avengers must team-up with their counterparts from the future, the Guardians of the Galaxy. In Avengers #211, the team roster changes yet again when their liaison, Gyrich, demands a change in their lineup. This followed soon by the breakdown and subsequent court martial of Yellowjacket. Although previous stories had suggested that Henry "Yellowjacket" Pym was mentally unstable, this is the famous story which depicts him hitting his wife. This shocking image would continue to haunt both readers and Pym himself for many years. |
