Iron Man

Billionaire, genius, and futurist, Tony Stark made his fortune in the arms business before he found himself taken hostage by terrorists. Finding purpose in captivity, Stark designs Iron Man: a robotic armor designed for combat. Powered by the arc reactor embedded in his own chest, Tony continues to fight for peace as a weapon of the future.

Early adventures largely focus on Iron Man's battle against the communist threat while Tony struggles to hide his secret identity from his friends Happy Hogan and Pepper Potts, but in this time, he also became a founding Avenger and the technical genius behind the creation of S.H.I.E.L.D. The title was largely updated in the late seventies by David Michelinie as he battled alcoholism and received a new supporting cast in Bethany Cabe, Bambi Arbogast, and James Rhodes (who would soon replace Tony in the role of Iron Man before becoming War Machine). He briefly served as Secretary of Defense before he was transformed by Extremis and appointed Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Although his fall from grace was difficult, he is continuing to excel as Iron Man and has recently joined the Guardians of the Galaxy.
