Created by Stan Lee, many of the earliest Iron Man stories were written by his brother, Larry, and featured a series of different writers before Gene Colan stepped into the role. Originally depicted in cold gray, Iron Man was soon colored gold to make him more heroic, but it was Spider-Man co-creator and costume artist extraordinaire Steve Ditko who added the red and created the more iconic armor that future armors were based on.
Early Iron Man stories featured Tony's secretary Pepper Potts and bodyguard Happy Hogan along with a series of Communist villains including the Mandarin, Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, and the Black Widow. Originally depicted as a Soviet spy femme fatale, the Black Widow seduced the noble Hawkeye into a life of crime, but the two would redeem themselves as Avengers. |
