When a freak lightning accident exposes Barry Allen to a mixture of unknown chemist, he gains the gift of speed. Inspired by comics of the Golden Age Flash, he becomes the Flash for a whole new era. This new science-inspired hero marked the beginning of the Silver Age of comics in the DC universe.
Following four sporadic appearances in Showcase (#4, 8, 13-14), Barry Allen began featuring in his own series (continuing the numbering of the previous series) with a wide variety of colorful original villains. The outlandishness of Barry's adventures contrasted with the quaint nuclear family setting established by his girlfriend (turned wife in issue #165), reporter Iris West, and her nephew Wally who became Barry's sidekick, Kid Flash. Issue #123, "The Flash of Two Worlds," introduced the parallel dimension of Earth-2 featuring the heroes of the Golden Age including Jack Garrick, the original Flash. |
