With their timeline restored, the X-Men face a powerful new threat from within when they encounter Onslaught. Created from the minds of Professor Xavier and Magneto following Fatal Attractions, Onslaught was only defeated at the cost of both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four resulting in Heroes Reborn. In the aftermath, Xavier was taken into custody and anti-mutant sentiment rose dramatically resulting in Operation: Zero Tolerance, a mutant containment effort led by the enigmatic Bastion.
After the comatose body of Magneto went missing, the X-Men were visited by a younger version of him with no memory of a previous life. Simply calling himself Joseph, he came to join the X-Men and develop a love triangle with Rogue and Gambit. When the true Magneto returned in Magneto War, he took the Earth's magnetic poles hostage, killed his doppleganger, and negotiated for private dominion over the nation of Genosha, declaring it a mutant state and dramatically increasing world tension. This was soon followed by The Twelve, another crossover event, in which Apocalypse captures twelve key mutants to create a new immortal vessel for himself with the body of Nate Grey. Interrupting the process, Cyclops is merged Apocalypse and destroyed, though they would both return by the next era. In Dream's End, the events of Days of Future Past unfold a new as Senator Robert Kelly begins his run for presidency. Believing that he will enact a repressive anti-mutant agenda, a new Brotherhood of Mutants targets him for destruction. Meanwhile, Moira MacTaggert creates a cure for the Legacy Virus, but it has a cost. Finally, the era concludes as in Eve of Destruction as Magneto readies Genosha for war and the X-Men engage in an assassination attempt. |
