Following the death of his mentor, the original Flash, Kid Flash Wally West steps up to his legacy as defender of both Keystone City and Central City. With his history and personality largely established in Teen Titans, Wally was more well-rounded and identifiable than his predecessor, however the pressure to live up to his legacy always kept him from realizing he was one of the greats
Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn provided the first acclaimed run of the era demonstrating Waid's characteristic appeal to history and continuity by reintroducing speedsters from DC past including the sage Max Mercury and Jesse Quick, daughter of Golden Age hero Johnny Quick. However they also introduced the grandson of Barry Allen from the 30th century, Bart Allen. Due to his connection to the speed force from birth, Bart lived at super-speed, aging at an accelerated rate, and forced to live in a virtual environment projected at a speed he could comprehend. After Wally helped cure his condition, Bart became Impulse, future successor to the legacy of the Flash. This series also marked one of the first major contributions of writer Geoff Johns to the DC universe. His run added depth to the Flash's rogues gallery and wove long dramas between Flash and his supporting cast. |
