John Byrne's arrival marked another highpoint for the series. Serving both as writer and artist, Byrne brought realism and depth to the series. It was characterized by complex moral issues such as the Trial of Reed Richards where Mr. Fantastic is held accountable for sparing the life of Galactus in an intergalactic court. It also address more mature adult issues like the loss of Reed and Sue's second child during birth, and raised the profile of Sue Storm by showing the damage capable of projecting force fields as she was briefly transformed into the villain Malice.
