While many events mark a change in comic eras, the death of Gwen Stacy is large part of what inaugurated the Bronze Age of comics. Followed by the subsequent death of the Green Goblin, this story introduced a new level of tragedy and consequence to comics in general and Spider-Man in particular. Since this origin, no event has been more formative in the history of Spider-Man.
Along with the darker plotlines came the introduction of the Punisher, a remorsely murderous vigilante waging a war on crime using the skills he learned in Vietnam, and the Black Cat, a cat thief attracted to the dangerous life style of Spider-Man. Although they never seemed to make things work, their mutual flirtation would become a regular part of the series. |
