Following the departure of long-time writer Robert Kanigher, the series passed to popular creator Dennis O'Neil. In an effort to make Diana seem tougher and more self-sufficient, O'Neil removed her powers and Paradise Island to have her become a martial arts hero. This depiction was poorly received and the character soon returned to her classic form under a series of creators.
