With new series editor Julius Schwartz came the "new look" Batman, removing the campy, otherworldly elements of the past several years and returning to crime dramas set in Gotham City with familiar enemies. This era featured the debut of the yellow circle around the bat-insignia, but the most memorable contribution to the Batman mythos was the introduction of Barbara Gordon, daughter of police commissioner James Gordon, who became the newest and most famous Batgirl.
In 1969, the collaboration of Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams created a much grimmer, darker Batman series which became a fundamental influence on subsequent Batman work. His most iconic contribute to Batman's legacy is the creation of immortal mastermind and global terrorist leader, Ra's Al Ghul, who provided a new kind of enemy for Batman, a ruthless idealist with resources that dwarf his own. |
