Born with special powers and abilities, Professor X gathered his original class of students into a superhero team consisting of Cyclops, Angel, Beast, Iceman, and Marvel Girl. In their very first issue, they battle their archnemesis, Magneto followed soon by his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants including the Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Mastermind, and the Toad. The X-Men's early adventures introduced the prehistoric Savage Land and its jungle ruler, Ka-Zar, followed by the mutant hunting Sentinels and the fratricidal Juggernaut.
In addition to their adventures, early X-Men stories focus on the distinct characterization of their leads between the self-repressed Cyclops, the debonair Angel, the loquacious Beast, and the class clown Iceman. However the most enduring storyline is the love triangle between Cyclops, Marvel Girl, and Angel. With a strong emphasis on original characters and locales in the initial Stan Lee issues, it quickly fell into repetitive generic adventures until the arrival of artist Neal Adams (along with supporting characters Havok and Polaris) injected a new life into the series. Unfortunately, this did not prevent cancellation; after issue #66, the series began reprinting old adventures. |
