Debuting in Journey Into Mystery, Thor was the first popular adaptation of myth to superhero. His origin told of a disabled doctor who found a magic walking stick that transformed him into the mighty Thor. He would soon remember that he was always the mighty Thor, banished to Earth and cast in mortal form by his father to teach him humility. As Doctor Donald Blake, Thor fell in love with his nurse, Jane Foster, and yet was forbidden by Odin to tell her who he was. Originally written by Stan Lee's brother, Larry, with Stan providing plot ideas, the amazing world of Asgard and its pantheon was rendered by Jack Kirby who brought his own ostentatious style to the viking legends.
Most of Thor's most memorable characters are introduced in his first run including his half-brother and nemesis, Loki; his daughter and goddess of death, Hela; the demon god, Surtur; the mighty Frost Giants; and the mystical Enchantress with her personal warrior, the Executioner. Also introduced are Thor's closest allies and dearest friends: Balder the Brave, Sif, and the Warriors Three (Fandral the Dashing, Hogun the Grim, and Volstagg the Lion of Asgard). |
